Evangelion Merchandise & Resources

GAINAX: The mad geniuses behind Evangelion and its three movie incarnations. In addition to television and film productions, they make really interesting computer software. (An Eva typing game, anyone?) They have an English web site with all sorts of cool stuff, downloads, a full section on Eva with the images you see in this article. Don't steal them from me, register and get legal copies for free!

A.D.Vision/ ADV Films: This Houston-based company is the American licensee and distributor of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series. To date, they have released Eva in laserdisc, VHS video and DVD formats. The series consists of 13 VHS tapes (dubbed or subbed format). The DVD release will span a total of eight DVDs. (Get in on DVD: you have four different language options: Japanese, English, Spanish and French. It is the better buy overall, plus no sub vs. dub arguments!) ADV's web site also has a whole section on Eva, including an interesting piece on the series' religious symbolism.

Viz Communications: There is an Evangelion manga/graphic novel series written by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the series' character designer! Currently four graphic novels, collected volumes of the comic book "miniseries," have been published. The series was on hiatus, due to Sadamoto's busy schedule — hey, he's in demand — but kicked back into gear during Fall 2000. Viz also has a very informative page on the series' manga incarnation at its site.

Manga Video: Manga will be distributing the theatrical, movie version in 2001. (I didn't cover these in the article because I have not seen them myself...yet. There were three movies, and I am not sure which of them they will be handling.) They have confirmed that they will be using ADV's English voice cast. (Smart move.) Look for new announcements on their site.

King Record Co., Ltd./ Starchild: King is the Japanese recording company that released the legitimate/authentic Evangelion soundtracks and audio recordings. If you are dying to buy your very own copy of "Cruel Angel's Thesis," "Fly Me to the Moon," or other Eva songs, make sure it is by this company. (The catalog numbers start with KICA on my soundtrack CDs.) Accept no substitutes: don't buy bootlegs!
